I make things, always have. I love to paint but came to it late, in my 30s. My painting is experiential; it’s about recreating the feelings I was having when I decided to paint something. I paint because I love to: the process, the colors, textures, smells, ownership. It is how I understand the world, how I make sense of things and people, how I see, how I enjoy.
Painting is a pleasure, and it is a pleasure when others enjoy looking at things I’ve made. I hope you do, and that you will if you are interested in seeing more. I will be adding work to this page whenever I can, so please check back. Thanks for your interest.

Since drawing is a primary tool of understanding my surroundings, I always travel with drawing or painting materials to sketch along the way, as well as a camera to take reference photos.
I love the Southwestern United States, Cape Cod, MA, and the Aegean and Mediterranean islands, all areas where there is lots of light, lots of sky, lots of horizon. I haven't traveled nearly enough.

Not so long ago in New York City there were lots of great bars where local musicians played easily and freely. Then extreme enforcement of “quality of life” infractions on top of astronomical rent increases closed most of them. But throughout the 1980s and much of the 90s I spent long marvelous nights going from bar to bar, sketching in pencil and watercolor. Those sketches are the basis of this series. All these wonderful musicians are friends and these paintings are a tribute to their art and determination.

This series started since no-one I know sits still long enough while awake. Now I want to paint people with their eyes open. It helps that I’ve decided it is okay to use photo reference. Since I started I discovered that it’s frequently really hard to paint open eyes in a satisfying fashion.

This is a series of paintings made as I was adjusting to my changing body. I had recently had a hysterectomy and started using an insulin pump and was pretty uncomfortable with all the scars. I found whenever I sat down to draw myself there was never room for my face or legs. Pretty funny, actually.
I develop a crush on whatever I am painting while I am painting it, so I decided to paint myself and see if it would help. It did.
